This is an easy read if you are new to neurobiology and clients may find it a useful resource.

Bonnie Badenoch is a practitioner who has studied with many of the authors listed here. She has a great deal of experience and is also a beautiful writer. These are excellent books for anyone working directly with clients.

Cozolino, Louis 2010 The Neuroscience of Psychotherapy: Healing the Social Brain, W.W. Norton: New York.

Cozolino, Louis 2002 The Neuroscience of Human Relationships: Attachment and the developing social brain, W.W.  Norton: New York.

Lou Cozolino is one of the very popular authors in the Interpersonal Neurobiology field and these are a few of his excellent books.

Emerson, David & Hooper, Elizabeth 2011 Overcoming Trauma through Yoga: Reclaiming your body, North Atlantic Books: Berkeley.

Emerson, David 2015 Trauma Sensitive Yoga in Therapy: Bringing the body into treatment,W. Norton: New York.

David Emerson works at The Trauma Centre in Boston with Bessel van der Kolk. They have done some interesting work using a range of somatic approaches. Great books if you’re interested in learning more about trauma and the body. 

Fisher, Janina 2017 Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors: Overcoming internal self-alienation, Routledge: New York.

Fisher, Janina 2011 Psychological Aids for Working with Psychological Trauma, (available from Open Leaves Books in Brisbane).

Janina Fisher is another of the practitioners writing in this area. Her book is excellent and her flip chart (Psychological Aids…) is very helpful in our psychoeducation work with clients. 

Grawe, Klaus 2007 Neuropsychotherapy: How the neurosciences inform effective psychotherapy, Psychology Press: New York.

Herman, Judith 1992 Trauma and Recovery: From Domestic Abuse to Political Terror, Pandora: London.

This is foundational reading for anyone doing trauma work!

Levine, Peter A 1997 Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma, North Atlantic Books: Berkeley.

Levine, Peter A & Kline, Maggie 2007 Trauma Through a Child’s Eyes: Awakening the Ordinary Miracle of Healing, North Atlantic Books: Berkeley.

Levine, Peter 2010 In An Unspoken Voice: How the body releases trauma and restores goodness, North Atlantic Books: Berkeley.

Levine, Peter 2015 Trauma and Memory: Brain and bodying a search for the living pastNorth Atlantic Books: California.

Peter Levine’s book on working with children is an excellent resource. All of his work on trauma includes many strategies effective for work with survivors.

Perry, Bruce & Szalavitz, Maia 2006 The Boy Who Was Raised As A Dog: And other stories from a child psychiatrist’s notebook, Basic Books: New York.

Szalavitz, Maia & Perry, Bruce 2010 Born For Love: Why empathy is essential – and endangered, Harper: New York.

Both of these are excellent books. The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog is probably the best book I have read about the impact of trauma on children.

Perry, Bruce D. & Winfrey, Oprah 2021 What Happened to You: Coversations on Trauma, Resilience and Healing, Pan McMillan: London.

This is a wonderful book for anyone, including those who have had experiences of trauma. The audio book is read by both Bruce Perry and Oprah Winfrey and is a real conversation about trauma.

Siegel, Daniel 2010 The Mindful Therapist: A Clinican’s guide to mindsight and neural integration,W. Norton: New York.

van der Kolk, Bessel; McFarlane, Alexander C.; Weisaeth, Lars (eds) 2007 Traumatic Stress: The effects of overwhelming experience on mind, body, and society, The Guildford Press: New York.

van der Kolk, Bessel 2014 The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, mind, and body in the healing of trauma, Viking: New York.

Van der Kolk’s work has been important in the trauma field for a long time. His most recent book above is by far his best and is accessible and easy to read. 

Ziegler, Dave 2011 Traumatic Experience and the Brain: A handbook for understanding and treating those traumatised as children, Acacia Publishing: Arizona.
